INFOGRAPHIC: Preventing Periodontal Disease

In the infographic below, provided by Serenity Dental Clinic, prevention for periodontal disease is outlined nicely with graphic. The disease, which nearly 65-million American adults suffer from (47.2% of those above 30-years old, according to the CDC), is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bones that support the teeth.

Some warnings of the disease may include consistently bad breath, bleeding gums, loose teeth, and/or painful chewing. However, these symptoms can easily be avoided if you brush and floss your teeth regularly and visit the dentist annually, as indicated below.

FOR THE DENTISTS: This infographic can play a major role in your office, just by making patients aware of the disease. Many suffer, yet many are unaware. Feel free to share across your social media feeds or print it out for your office.

The Reasons Behind Getting Dental X-Rays

Getting x-rays at the dentist may not be your favorite thing, but this insightful infographic from DentAbout.com helps outline the importance behind them. Although both intraoral and extraoral x-rays show the teeth, their focuses differ from the general health of your teeth (intraoral) to your jaw and skull (extraoral). Nonetheless, these x-rays allow for the dentist to do their job and check for decay, cavities, and disease that aren’t visible to the naked eye.

Keystone’s First Annual LATAM Seminar a Big Success

MIAMI, Fla. – Keystone Industries has been expanding their dental-industry boundaries wider than ever before over the past couple years and the impact was felt amongst members of the Latin America dental community this May.

The Sheraton Miami was home to Keystone Industries first annual LATAM Dental Seminar, which was dedicated to customers from Latin American countries in Central and South America. The seminar, which was held May 20-21, provided attendees all the necessary training and knowledge to take their dental businesses to the next innovative level by using the Keystone product lines. Guest speakers and presenters touched on all the big-sellers, as well as some lesser-known technologies looking to hit the ground running in the Latin American market.

Dennis Urban, CDT, a key opinion leader in the dental and denture field, who has given lectures around the world, gave his presentation on removable technology followed by a live demonstration of denture processing with our Diamond D acrylic and the Tecnoflask, Keystone’s new microwavable denture flask.

On top of this big hit, Mike Prozzillo, VP of Sales, and Derek Keene, VP of Marketing, spoke to the attendees about mouthguards and thermoplastics Keystone offers, as well as how important Pro-Form mouthguard protection is to athletes in the United States. “The movement for oral protection is spreading into Central and South America through sports like soccer (futbol), MMA fighting, and boxing. With our biggest and best customers from these countries south of the United States attending this seminar, it was very beneficial for their market,” said Prozzillo.

Other speakers at the seminar included Sales Manager Wayne Allen, who shared knowledge and expertise of the acquired Bosworth product lines and the benefits it provides to dental practices, and Meg Shank of Apavia, a company that recently became exclusive international partners with Keystone for water filtration technology, who spoke about the impact and importance of water filtration in dentist offices and how it will be growing over time.

A happy group after the seminar!

We here at Keystone Industries take pride in offering high-quality, custom-fit mouthguards that lead the market in saving teeth and money all at once. Our Pro-Form materials are used from the highest levels of professional sports all the way through youth leagues, and offer the highest level of protection, retention, and comfort possible. On top of all this, athletes are also able to speak and breathe easier than most types of mouthguards on the market.

Take a look at some of these alarming statistical findings, just to show how important this level of protection is for athletes in any and all sports:

  • 5 MILLION teeth are lost every year in sports activities (Source)
  • 34% of sports injuries involve the face (Source)
  • Dental injuries can cost more than 20X the preventative costs of a custom-fit Pro-Form mouthguard (Source)
  • 200,000 injuries prevented annually by mouthguards (Source)

Now that you know how important this piece of protection is, let’s get into how the process is made simple for you. Below are two embedded videos from our YouTube channel that demonstrate the vacuum forming process and how to customize the mouthguard. Both processes can be done in either a dentist office or a dental lab.

In this first video, see how our vacuum former is able to make a custom-fit mouthguard out of one of our laminates:

In the second video, watch the tutorial of our centri-fuse kit, which easily puts custom logos, numbers, and letters onto an already-formed mouthguard:

Role players like these are vital in the process. But now you may be asking about what star players we have readily available to actually protect the teeth.

There are 200+ color and style laminates available in square or round. Your custom experience is endless, but can start with these popular choices in styles:

Don’t forget of the most innovative way to select a mouthguard in the dental industry! If you have an iOS device with a camera, be sure to download the Keystone Industries app to try on a virtual mouthguard for yourself!

Choose between any color and style we offer, and see how it looks in your mouth inside the app. This is an excellent selling point for a patient in the chair of your office, and can increase sales with no effort at all. You won’t see an app like this in any app store!

There’s a lot more from where these come from, so checking out the Pro-Form section of our website would be best to find exactly what you’re looking for in thickness, style, color, shape, etc. and even clear and black straps, which are required in most youth sports leagues. There are many videos on our YouTube channel and in our Learning Center, as well as our most up-to-date pamphlets and brochures in our Catalog section available for your download.

Which Halloween candies should you eat and avoid?

Although you may be excited about Halloween at the end of the week, just remember: it’s a dentist’s least favorite holiday.

Before you dive into your child’s trick-or-treat bag or crack open those candy bars you were given at work, take into mind that too many of these candies are no where near as good as others are, and you might be better off sticking to certain kinds. We know, we sound like your mother warning about cavities and sweets, but hopefully this list outlines what to eat-up on Halloween and what to try and avoid:

product_taffy_07Worst: Any type of sticky or gooey candy, such as: caramel, taffy, and nuts. It doesn’t take a genius to figure this one out. These types of candies will stick all over your mouth, get into those hard-to-reach places, and stay there. The longer they stay there, the more problems you’ll encounter, such as bacterias and cavities. Just don’t do it.

GobstopperNot great, but not too bad: Hard candies that are just daring you to break your teeth on. These can range from jawbreakers to lollipops, or just anything that is asking to chip or cut your teeth and gums. They also have a tendency to become sticky, and thus remaining in your mouth longer to attract unwanted bacteria and acids.

Orbit_Sugarfree_Gum_WintermintBest: Sugar-free gum. The American Dental Hygiene Association has been running the National Dental Hygiene Month throughout October with Wm. Jr. Wrigley Company, promoting the chewing of Orbit’s sugar-free line over anything. It’s a solid call not only because there is no stickiness associated with it, but also because the natural sugar it is sweetened with, xylitol, does not allow bacteria to be formed on it. Same great gum, less damaging to your teeth.

We hope you enjoy the Halloween holiday this weekend! If you’re doing anything dental related, make sure to post on our Facebook page or tweet at us!

October is a big month for us all: dedicated to breast cancer awareness, dental hygiene

It’s a busy month of awareness all-around for the dental industry. Not only is the American Dental Hygiene Association running a month-long campaign for National Dental Hygiene Month (NDHM) to raise public awareness for good oral health, but October is also the month dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness as well, where you’ll see pink colors decked out everywhere to show support (including our own website).

On the AHDA’s website, there is an individual event page for everything related to NDHM. They’ve partnered with the W.M. Wrigley Company for the fifth consecutive year, focusing mainly on the four components of oral hygiene and ways to improve public awareness about bettering oral health. There is a “selfie” based contest being conducted as well as posters available to be downloaded to put online or in your office on the ADHA website. Below, you can watch a video announcement from ADHA President Kelli Swanson Jaecks on sponsoring the NDHM month and things to come.

NDHM-2014-banner

As we all know through various companies and organizations support and promotion, October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The majority of people today have been affected by this horrible disease in some shape or form, which is why the spread of awareness and support is vital in helping fight back to find a cure. At Keystone Industries, the past couple of years we’ve sold pink breast cancer awareness-themed Pro-Form mouthguards with portions of the proceeds going towards breast cancer research. Athletes and dentists from all over have been thrilled with the performance and protection of these mouthguards, so showing this kind of support with it going to a good cause does indeed help out. This year, we took it up a notch, and made our whole website pink in support, too.

We've updated our website for the month of October in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

We’ve updated our website for the month of October in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Both of these calls for awareness this month are for good causes, and beneficiary to everyone inside and outside of the dental industry. Be sure to spread the word of the meaning of this month positively with friends on social media so we can help spread it even more! Oral health and breast cancer affects everyone’s lives, and it’s up to us to help make a change.
